How to double a recipe

To double a recipe, multiply every ingredient by 2: 1 cup becomes 2 cups, 1/2 teaspoon becomes 1 teaspoon, and so on. Rather than working through the list by hand, paste your ingredients above and tap Double (2×). This recipe scaler rewrites every quantity for you, including fractions like 1/3 and 3/4. Doubling is the most common reason people reach for a recipe scaling calculator, usually when cooking for a bigger group.

How to halve a recipe

To halve a recipe, multiply each ingredient by 0.5. Halving is handy when a recipe makes more than you need or you are testing something new. Tap ½ Half and the calculator instantly shows the smaller ingredient list. When you halve a recipe that uses a whole egg, beat the egg and use about half by volume, or scale the rest of the batch to suit a whole egg.

Adjust a recipe for a different number of servings

The easiest way to adjust recipe servings is to tell the calculator the size you have and the size you want. Enter the original servings and the new servings, then tap Resize recipe. The tool works out the multiplier for you (new servings divided by original servings) and resizes every ingredient. Going from 4 to 6 servings, for example, applies a 1.5× multiplier. The multiplier is shown quietly under the buttons so you always know exactly what is being applied.

What scaling does and does not change

A recipe scaler changes ingredient amounts in a straight line, but a few things do not scale so neatly. Cooking time, oven temperature and pan size do not double when the recipe does: a doubled cake usually needs a larger pan or a second tin, and a little more time rather than twice as long. Leavening (baking powder and soda), salt and strong spices can be scaled slightly conservatively in very large batches. Use the resized amounts as an accurate starting point, then judge doneness the usual way.

Recipe resizing FAQ

No. It scales ingredient amounts only. Cooking time, oven temperature and pan size do not scale linearly, so check doneness and use a larger or extra pan when you double a recipe.
